Palmetto Tree

The Palmetto Tree is an attractive feature of the coastal areas of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. It is classified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as Inodes Palmetto or Sabal Palmetto, but is commonly called the Cabbage Palmetto.

Commonly used as a decorative tree in the Atlantic shore areas of the Southeast, its large leaf bud was priced as a salad vegetable for use in making pickles and relishes.

In Florida, some use has been made of the fibers obtained from its leaf bases; however, since it takes many years for this tree to attain its full growth, such uses are considered wasteful since the tree is destroyed in the process.
